Temperament assessment and support

Temperament is a set of inborn characteristics such as sensitivity, activity, intensity and adaptability. It’s the way we do what we do, our style: the how rather than the why of behavior. There are strengths and challenges in all varieties of temperament. Moderate temperaments are more common than extremes, and thus are generally more familiar. All variations of temperament are normal.

I have always been drawn to approaches that feel deeply right to me, that honor who we are. I work from a strength’s perspective. Each of us has an abundance of internal resources close at hand. We don’t need big complicated responses. We need effective right responses.

Psychologists John and Julie Gottman’s research-based approaches draw from simple right changes that can make big differences.  Their finding that softening our approach to our partner works much better than a negative stance is an example.

This is also true with our children, even, and especially when they are strong-willed children. It is also true with ourselves. When we label and judge ourselves, it turns the dial up on feelings of shame and unworthiness.

Feeling bad about ourselves does not lend itself to change and healing. We all need to feel connected to ourselves and each other. I can help you to make shifts like these that are doable and life enhancing.

Life can be messy. More than the very busiest of lives or the most turned up events and experiences, our responses to that which we can’t control dictates just how challenging we will find these times. We each hold the key to responding in ways that help us manage rather than to be managed by that which we can’t control.

Mindfulness and calming self-care, noticing the story we tell ourselves and the particular spin we put on our story: are we a survivor or an unlucky victim, and how long we park or brood in stressful places, are all influential variables that can greatly impact our experience for better or worse.

I invite you down that road, your own personal best road and life.
