Alice Shannon, MFT

Welcome

I grew up in Berkeley where my mother studied dreams on her own for years. Eventually, she earned most of her income doing dream-related work.  At nineteen I knew that I wanted to be a therapist, a desire that never wavered.

At twenty-five, I was in graduate school with a two-year-old who was not an easy-going little guy. He never had been. That experience led me to the field of temperament, our innate style. Temperament affirms a wider range of normal  than is often recognized.

The research notes both the predominance of people who have moderate temperaments and the normal variations of minority temperaments on the edges of the continuum, which made it a deeply-affirming experience for me as an uncommonly-normal parent of an uncommonly-normal child.

The more I learned, the more life changing this new-to-me body of research became. For those of us dealing with one or more extremes in temperament such as low adaptability, high sensitivity, or high intensity, the field of temperament can open the door to a new and profound understanding. I’m passionate about the value of temperament education and support. The field of temperament isn’t new, and research is ongoing; yet, many people - both lay and professional - are unaware of the term and its significance.

I believe

  • That we are each our own best resource

  • In a diverse and wide range of normal

  • That big concerns don’t necessarily or even often require a big response

  • That small interventions can make a big difference when they’re right

  • In the healing power of pauses, of humor, and knowledge; and finding ways that honor and support our best selves

  • That a positive therapy experience involves therapist and clients who work together as partners who each bring expertise into the room

You wander from room to room hunting for the diamond necklace that is already around your neck.
